Litigious Stalinists

October 9, 2009

I’m fascinated by this BBC report about Joseph Stalin’s grandson suing a liberal Russian newspaper for claiming that his grandfather personally ordered the deaths of millions of people, and ‘defaming’ the dictator’s reputation.

Personally I think this is just as shocking as if a grandson of Hitler sued the Guardian for defaming his reputation, while the German government tried to tentatively rehabilitate Hitler.

The historian Orlando Figes gives his views on the case here. Certainly a story to keep an eye on.
